What is the best way to wake up? Dive in to the fascinating subject of open innovation in the good company of professionals. On the morning of January 20, PARK INNOVAARE and Swiss Technology Award winner Ampegon AG welcomed industry representatives to the first DISRUPTIVE MORNING. This time the event was dedicated to the novel short pulse modulator developed by Ampegon for the SwissFEL at the Paul Scherrer Institute PSI.

DISRUPTIVE MORNING is an open, highly interactive event designed to provide project leaders and R&D experts with a platform for exchanging their experience in project realization. Ampegon AG from Turgi (CH), global provider of high-power systems for research facilities and industry, presented their development project for the SwissFEL and explained how open innovation methods helped them succeed.

“We realized very quickly that we could not do it on our own”, said Marcel Frei, Head of R&D at Ampegon AG, to make a start. To meet the needs of the client (Paul Scherrer Institute), the company had to team up not only with the PSI itself but also with the ETH and ABB. Their goal was to multiply their know-how. Through the close collaboration between the partners, Ampegon AG has achieved unprecedented results: their short pulse modulator for high-power microwave amplifiers can deliver signal modulation up to 10 ppm, a far better performance than before and a new world record. Developed for the free electron laser, the modulator is also suitable for medical application (cancer treatments, electroporation) or industrial processes (liquid sterilization, ED drilling).

Among other things, Marcel Frei touched the questions of IP management in an open innovation process, the challenge of finding the right partner as well as a competent supplier, and the ways of turning such a collaboration into win-win-win-… situation. Later on, the group was able to visit the production site of the modulator, where Ampegon’s innovation was presented from the technical point of view.
